A simple explanation of the PVLAS anomaly in spontaneously broken mirror models
نویسندگان
چکیده
The PVLAS anomaly can be explained if there exist millicharged particles of mass < ∼ 0.1 eV and electric charge ǫ ∼ 10 −6 e. We point out that such particles occur naturally in spontaneously broken mirror models. We argue that this interpretation of the PVLAS anomaly is not in conflict with astrophysical constraints due to the self interactions of the millicharged particles which lead them to be trapped within stars. This conclusion also holds for a generic paraphoton model.

متن کاملAxion interpretation of the PVLAS data?
The PVLAS collaboration has recently reported the observation of a rotation of the polarization plane of light propagating through a transverse static magnetic field. Such an effect can arise from the production of a light, mA ∼ meV, pseudoscalar coupled to two photons with coupling strength gAγ ∼ 5 × 10 −6 GeV. Here, we review these experimental findings, discuss how astrophysical and heliosco...
متن کاملUnbroken versus broken mirror world: a tale of two vacua
If the Lagrangian of nature respects parity invariance then there are two distinct possibilities: either parity is unbroken by the vacuum or it is spontaneously broken. We examine the two simplest phenomenologically consistent gauge models which have unbroken and spontaneously broken parity symmetries, respectively. These two models have a Lagrangian of the same form, but a different parameter ...
متن کاملTreatment of the Mirror Foot with Central Ray Resection: Report of 2 Cases
The mirror foot is a rare congenital foot anomaly which is often associated with 6- to 8-toed polydactyly. Postaxial polydactyly is the most common form of this anomaly, while central polydactyly is seen infrequently. We report on 2 cases of the central mirror-foot anomaly. Calcaneus duplication and fibular hypoplasia were present in 1 case. We treated both patients by resecting the middle foot...
متن کاملSearching for energetic cosmic axions in a laboratory experiment: testing the PVLAS anomaly
Astrophysical sources of energetic gamma rays provide the right conditions for maximal mixing between (pseudo)scalar (axion-like) particles and photons if their coupling is as strong as suggested by the PVLAS claim. This is independent of whether or not the axion interaction is standard at all energies or becomes suppressed in the extreme conditions of the stellar interior. The flux of such par...
